Natural-Edge Redwood Coffee Table

Natural-Edge Redwood Coffee Table

This large slab of redwood has beautiful figure on both surface. The client, nor I, could decide which was the best, so it is reversible! The beautiful board was fire damaged with most of the natural edge charred and  there were some punky-wood areas that also needed hardening, but was essentially stable. The base is two units which can be moved independently to fit under the top as it is flipped from either surface (a two person job, of course). The sculpted and stained alder wood bases mimic mangroves.

Material: Redwood, alder, stain

Dimensions:  ( h x w x d) 82″x 36″x 22″

Year made:   2013

Chrysochroa Table

Chrysochroa Table

Unusual  custom request!     Lots of problem solving and experimenting went into this piece.  I made several samples and models to clarify the process and jigs to match fit the walnut, beech and maple.

Mixed media includes:  legs-  sculpted polystyrene and fiberglass matte over a metal armature;  body-  book-matched black walnut, curly beech;  thorax- bird’s-eye maple;  head and eyes-  carved bass-wood, dichroic glass cabachons and onyx beads;  antennae- form-bent and carved walnut veneer layers.           Iridescence is achieved by air-brushing metallic and interference paints.

Material: mixed-media
Dimensions (h x w x d): 18″ x 54″ x 24″
Year Made: 2010

Demi-Lune and Mirror

Demi-Lune and Mirror

I like using a  balanced combination of light with dark  woods which enhance each ones characteristics without conflict; walnut is deep and rich, and curly maple is fresh and shimmering.  The cloth like folds are echoed in the matching  Wall coat rack with drape in the same entryway.

Material: curly maple, walnut
Dimensions (h x w x d): 68 x 36 x 16
Year Made: 1991

Side Table

Side Table

I really don’t think that my local home supplies store knew what they had when a friend found this incredibly beautiful single curly-maple board  amongst the soft maple shelving stack. Only just enough, with nothing to spare, to compliment the mahogany for this pair of tables.

Material: mahogany, curly maple
Dimensions (h x w x d): 24 x 18 x 9
Year Made: 1999

Meditation and Ritual Table

Meditation and Ritual Table

Symbolizing reverence, many cultures and traditions use cloth to drape themselves and/or artifacts during rituals. This piece evokes that sensibility. The user touches not only the objects of ritual but on which they are placed; smooth and tactile feel of the wood.

I also find this an appealing way to soften the sometimes hard lines of a structural element in my work.

Material: walnut, curly maple, paulownia
Dimensions (h x w x d): 15 x 48 x 22
Year Made: 2000

A Basket of Snakes – Dining Table

A Basket of Snakes - Dining Table

These snakes do not fight a mongoose but do feel the vibration and the swaying of my cultural memory. My fascination for these misunderstood yet revered creatures is unbounded.

Material: curly maple, rope
Dimensions (h x w x d): 30 x 72 x 42
Year Made: 1993
